Launch of new book: He Matakitenga Kura/In Their Words – by Te Hira Paenga and Samuel Carpenter

Te Hira Paenga and Samuel Carpenter, He Matakitenga Kura. He Kohikohinga Tuhinga Reo Māori / In Their Words. Te Reo Māori Historical Documents Project (Auckland: Te Wānanga Ihorangi and Laidlaw College, 2026).

It was a pleasure to launch on Monday (14 Sep 2026) this new book with my co-author, the Rev. Dr. Te Hira Paegna.

The pukapuka brings together nineteenth-century writings, reflections and historical material from influential Māori rangatira and Christian leaders, including Wiremu Tāmihana, Renata Kawepō, Āperahama Taonui, Himiona Kāmira, Hōtorene Keretene and Rev. Matiu Taupaki.

Drawing also on material from Te Rawiri, Te Paipera Tapu and other significant texts, the publication brings these Māori voices from history into contemporary conversation, exploring the connections between te reo Māori, whakapono and the histories of Aotearoa.

Designed as both a historical resource and a tool for learning, He Matakitenga Kura is available in two editions: a full te reo Māori edition and a bilingual te reo Māori and English edition. These can be purchased from the website of Te Wānanga Ihorangi here: He Matakitenga Kura – Te Wānanga Ihorangi.

I am also making available the contents page, introduction and sample sections from the book here (noting that in the hard copy the text is in parallel or diglot layout):
